Mitchell
County, North Carolina This poor fellow must have fallen through the air vent and died, either from a head injury or maybe a broken leg caused it to be unable to climb out of the mine. The air vent is a trap for unsuspecting animals in the woods. It is about 50 feet to the top of this one. Eastern Brown Bat taking a nap in the mine. Eastern Brown Bat at the Abernathy Mine. This side tunnel runs about 100 feet off the main shaft. At the end of the above pictured shaft, another tunnel turns to the left and runs another 40 feet or so, here there are numerous Pipistril bats sleeping on the walls. |
